Gavin Newsom:
Tackling San Francisco's
Toughest Problems
Gavin Newsom is running for Mayor to tackle San Francisco's toughest challenges.
That's what Newsom did with the recent Care Not Cash initiative.
Newsom went where others feared to tread and he emerged with the
most comprehensive reform of homeless policy in a generation. His
Care Not Cash plan will save the lives of homeless San Franciscans
and improve the quality of life for everyone.
As a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, Newsom has focused
on the core issues that make a difference for all San Franciscans.
He worked with residents from every corner of the City to restore
our neighborhood parks. Newsom sponsored legislation implementing
Rescue Muni's reform plan and helped put our Municipal Railway on
the road to recovery.
Now Gavin Newsom is taking this same sound policy approach and applying
it to the city's other fundamental concerns.
As San Francisco's next Mayor, Gavin Newsom will end the political
bickering that has prevented real solutions to our continuing housing
crisis. He will focus on proven policies that create housing opportunities
for the teachers, nurses, police officers, firefighters and other
working people who serve this city and deserve the opportunity to
live here.
Gavin Newsom will also make public safety a top priority. Nationally,
crime rates have begun to rise. He will make sure our public safety
services have the tools, leadership and training to meet the challenges
ahead.
San Francisco is facing an historic budget deficit that will put the
next Mayor to the test. As a businessperson who has created jobs,
met a payroll and balanced the books, Gavin Newsom is uniquely qualified
to meet the new fiscal crisis.
Newsom's career in public service began in 1996 when he was appointed President
of San Francisco's Parking and Traffic Commission. Later that year,
he was appointed to fill a vacant seat on the Board of Supervisors.
Voters elected Newsom to the Board of Supervisors in 1998, 2000
and 2002.
Newsom has built several successful businesses in Northern California.
In 1992, he opened his first business, the PlumpJack Wine Shop.
Today, Newsom is a general partner in a number of business enterprises,
including the PlumpJack Wine Shop, the PlumpJack Cafe, the Balboa
Cafe, the Matrix/Fillmore, the Squaw Valley Inn, and the PlumpJack
Management Group.
Gavin Newsom was born October 10, 1967 to the Honorable William Newsom
and Tessa Newsom. He grew up in the Bay Area and graduated from
Santa Clara University in 1989 with a Bachelor of Arts in Political
Science. Gavin is married to Kimberly Guilfoyle Newsom, a San Francisco
Assistant District Attorney.
